I am wondering if YouTubers and Instagrammers genuinely make some people feel bad about their lives or is it a trigger factor that makes some people realize they have not done much with their lives but ignoring the fact that there is so much life ahead of them? His videos were edited for the best parts but still if anything to take away from it was, you want to visit where he visited and his life story inspirational for people who maybe going through tough times because he pulled himself up from rock bottom to become who he was. I mean, if people watched travel episodes of Tony Bourdain or Stanley Tucci going around the world and people seem to admire the way Tony did it or learn from his travel experiences, why is it different watching Nate and Kara or some other travel vlogger? Before we insert the “Bourdain is a celebrity” factor in the equation, he came from a rough background and turbulent life to get to where he ended up.

The distinction I am trying to make is people watch celebrities on TV ( and these days lot of them are on Social Media as well) and it doesn’t seem to have the same effect as some Joe or Jane Instagrammer or YouTuber showcasing their lives.

Someone watching from another country wanting to visit the US would have a hard time deciding where to go. It would be like someone driving through Europe and show the really plebeian places. I’ve never seen anyone show the traveling in the 50 states in such bad taste and just gaudy exhibition of places like fake castles and mega gas stations. Their latest content including dating back a few years is just crass commercialism.

I started watching Nate and Kara in the last year hoping to get some insights on some countries I haven’t visited yet but planning to but the air was let off those tires really fast once I watched them and realized how shallow their content is and how they are devoid of any travel knowledge let alone passing on some to their viewers.

Yeah I get the whole “Everyday Joe and Jane I can relate to” YouTube personalities but I thought people watch them for content and not get depressed over someone’s curated life videos. The people on TV were ordinary people too before they became celebrities and the people who watch them made them celebrities ? Well, somebody must watch TV or they wouldn’t have programming going on lol And I watch TV than YouTube and I don’t watch Tiktok.

Also interesting that some people vicariously live through the camera lens of YouTubers instead of watching them as entertainment or try to get information and tips if you are watching a travel vlog, for your own travels ( Not that much is coming out of Nate and Kara on that front unless they are promoting a hotel most of their viewers can’t afford to stay and Nate won’t pay out of his own pocket) It’s kind of interesting how people seem to relate themselves to YouTubers and invest a lot of emotions into following their lives and consequently feeling bad about their own. I understand we all have our own dealt cards in life and some people may not have the financial means or obligatory responsibilities they can’t wiggle out of easily and drop everything and go travel the world but I’d also tend to think people can differentiate the lives of themselves and the lives of people they see on YouTube? Most people don’t make that mistake when watching celebrities on TV or lifestyles of rich and famous but they do when it comes to YouTube personalities? I am wondering if people actually do a “keeping up with the Joneses” or “ My life sucks” because they see a curated and staged video capsule of some YouTuber’s life for 20 minutes every week. This is a post I saw on the other sub about someone getting depressed and feel bad about their life because they watch a 20 minute capsule of Nate and Kara every week.
